Though for that I'll need someone to text or message me daily in order to keep myself accountable and on track.I think a few friends of mine are going to try o do p90x at night as a group so I could always send you a text when we do that and force you to do it as well (assuming you aren't doing anything else at the time like work).

Yeah, if it's not too much trouble that would be great! I just got a copy of P90X as well, so I could try to keep up with you guys.
Lolz hi Marika XD
Status: 18, 5'11-6'0, 210
Goal: Gain muscle in place of fat. I want to be in better shape, lose all the bulge. >n> A healthy weight for my height/build is like 160-170.
Plan: Walk/run the dog for an hour every day. What he feels he can do(old age, don't want to push him). Start running with Paprika, if not with her on my own. Use the exercise equipment that's set up in the garage.
BRB STRETCHING*facepalm* GET OFF THE FORMS AND WORK OUT FATTIE! GOD KELSEY YOU ARE SO LAZY
Oh by the way I didn't get to working out at all today, maybe I will start tomorrow >_>;
Just going to butt in here:
Current Status: I'm 15, 5'3" and about 156 pounds. I'm more muscle then I am fat, but there's still a significant amount of fat on my body that really needs to go away. It really takes a chunk out of my self-confidence when the kids in my marketing class make fun of my weight :/
Goal: 130-140 pounds. Even if I don't reach my goal, I'd like to gain more muscle and loose some chest. I'd also really like to be able to wear a swimsuit when summer rolls around. I've never had the self confidence to wear a two piece swimsuit, so I would really like to have the confidence to do so.
Plan to reach goal: Like Nikki, I got some P90X stuff for Christmas, and I'm pretty psyched to try it out. Hopefully it'll work as well as it says it will ^^
I'm also trying to cut soda out of my diet in its entirety. I'm already a vegetarian (which I'm proud to say was one of my successful goals last year), so I don't have to worry about meat.

Nikki, you are an inspiration. I stretched so hard last night.
Welp, this is my 2nd year at a con, and one of my cosplays requires me to look semi-muscular, so I gotta work out! I'm 16, 6'3" (taaalllll ;w;) and about 155 lbs. That's pretty skinny for someone of my stature. I'm not a stick, but I'm not rippling with muscle either. I have some slight definition, but that's it :U
I'd like to be able to gain some muscle, but not to look buff or anything. I'm going for the 'lean' look. I'm gonna start going to my local gym (I've been going for the past week or two every other day) and do lots of reps and weight lifting and such, (high weight/a few reps = gettin buff, low weight/many reps = lean muscle buildan :D) plus lots of protein! This is kind of hard since I'm vegan, but I'll make it work :3
I die a little bit inside every time someone mentions crunches. They're sooooo bad for your lower back. ;<

The only reason there bad for lower back is if not doing it right or unhealthy back. Crunches and sit ups mostly work the lower back. it works the abs too but not as much.
SOOO . i just went depressed . LOL - i gained enough pouds that my pants wont fit either costume.
.. and i plan on going to Sakuracon .
...
any tips ?
otherwise i'll do my previous diet

A lot of what I've read seems to suggest otherwise. At any rate, assuming there is a way to do it right, there are plenty of other ab exercises that IMO are better and easier to perform, without the risk of doing it wrong. ^^
Nightmare is right, but ya there are better exercises that are less strain and more overall effect like them big balls but they don't work the core as much because its a dispersed effect. I personally like crunches and sit ups, but need some that work the obliques and upper back. I'm bad at not doing those.I die a little bit inside every time someone mentions crunches. “We stopped teaching people to do crunches a long, long time ago,” says Dr. Richard Guyer, president of the Texas Back Institute. That’s because the “full flex” movement—the actual “crunch” part of crunches – puts an unhealthy strain on your back at its weakest point. The section with the most nerves (and most potential for nerve damage) is in the back of the spine, which is the very part that bends and strains during a sit-up.
“There are only so many bends or a ‘fatigue life’,” in your spinal disks,” says Stuart M. McGill, a professor of spine biomechanics at the University of Waterloo. Inside each disk is a mucus-like nucleus, he says, and “if you keep flexing your spine and bending the disk over and over again, that nucleus slowly breaches the layers and causes a disk bulge, or a disk herniation.” A herniated disk won’t show through your swimsuit, but it’s no fun, and can cause persistent back and leg pain, weakness, and tingling.
Think of the oft-repeated advice for movers: bend at the hips and lift with your legs, not your back. And what is a sit-up but a back bend done in a lying position? “When people are doing curl up over gym balls and sit-ups, and this kind of thing, they are replicating a very potent injury mechanism on their back,” says McGill. “Every time they bend it they are one repetition closer to damaging the disk.”
And of course, when people do crunches, they rarely stop at one or two: in the quest for flat abs, they’ll churn out dozens at a time, bringing them ever closer to “flex intolerance”—so much pain and stiffness that it’s difficult to tie one’s shoes or bend down to pick a penny off the ground.
Dubaby - in your room? uhh jump rope? wii, stair steppers with weights, dance. I don't think you can do much else, i guess a treadmill if u have one.
i'm actually planning on getting ddr for the wii (since i kinda... failed at buying it for 6 years for the ps2 XDD) so ima start on that again :3 as well as some arm action with my wii fitness XD

I did a little Googling on it. I know there's a guy Dr. Stuart McGill who has made his entire career writing about the back. He's interviewed in this article on Newsweek titled, "Stop Doing Sit-Ups: Why Crunches Don't Work (http://www.newsweek.com/blogs/the-human-condition/2009/06/03/stop-doing-sit-ups-why-crunches-don-t-work.html)"

I love working out with DDR!
Back in High School (when it first came out) we didn't see a friend for a whole summer. He just disappeared in his basement. When school started again he was this uber hot, fit, guy! Turns out he did nothing but play DDR for three months strait. He used to be a chubby gamer guy, now he's a hot gamer guy! :P
So lately I've heard a lot about P90X and have seen a few people talking about using it on here.... I was wondering how the program is working for some of you guys or if anyone has more info on it. If it works well enough I might try and find some of the work-outs online and start doing those around my room since I have most of the materials already.
Also any other suggedtions for online workout systems or anything would be greatly appreciated.
All I have to say is no matter what workout there is. Your bound to injure a certain muscle in the body If not doing it right, if using more weight than can be handle, or not fit to do it.
"The British Journal of Sports Medicine last year asserted that some of the key findings from the first Australian study of back pain might be wrong. Moreover, even if they were true for some people in pain, the results might not apply to the generally healthy and fit, whose trunk muscles weren’t misfiring in the first place."
The “core” remains a somewhat nebulous concept; but most researchers consider it the corset of muscles and connective tissue that encircle and hold the spine in place. If your core is stable, your spine remains upright while your body swivels around it. But, McGill says, the muscles forming the core must be balanced to allow the spine to bear large loads. If you concentrate on strengthening only one set of muscles within the core, you can destabilize your spine by pulling it out of alignment. Think of the spine as a fishing rod supported by muscular guy wires. If all of the wires are tensed equally, the rod stays straight. “If you pull the wires closer to the spine,” McGill says, as you do when you pull in your stomach while trying to isolate the transversus abdominis, “what happens?” The rod buckles. So, too, he said, can your spine if you overly focus on the deep abdominal muscles. “In research at our lab,” he went on to say, “the amount of load that the spine can bear without injury was greatly reduced when subjects pulled in their belly buttons” during crunches and other exercises.
I'm glad you are at least reading some stuff on this back subject, but most of the health information out there is complete @!%& and backwards. If you do what every major health "guru" or media source said you would be perplexed as to what the right way was because they are all saying something else. What works for one person doesn't always work for another. doing a sit up isn't a good exercise for someone who isn't thin or has back problems. That is fairly obvious. For everyone else? Who knows.. but its worked for dozens of years for many and that is all the evidence that is really needed to whether it is good (for a select people) to do, compared to another exercise.

I have still yet to hear why anyone would want to bend their lower back like that. I mean, what activity would you do (unless you're a gymnast or something I guess) that would require you to bend your lower back in such a way? Try lifting something really heavy with your lower back bent like how it would be when doing a crunch .. okay, I'm kidding, don't actually do that because you'll hurt yourself.
Anyways, I think I've already posted about 5 or 6 times on this topic in this thread. I don't want to turn it into an abs debate. XD So, I'll leave it alone now.
*Does a Golf Clap* Yes very true what you said.LoL I'm not sure whether I like golf claps or not. :(
I'd like to see people post some pics of the healthy meals they're eating. :D
Here's one from me:
[/img]
Spring mix salad with poppyseed dressing, topped with soy nuts and sunflowers seeds. Then I also have a sliced Gala apple sprinkled with cinnamon. mmm~ :D
Daaayum. What did you do to make yourself slim, Kelsey? O.o
My mom decided to get a Wii fit, so I'm going to try to do that alot. Hopefully I can lose weight between that, body dynamics at school, and track which starts in a week.
*post*Zomg it's Curvezilla! D:
Jump ropes are insaaaaane. I can only do about 5 minutes worth (not even consecutive) and .. no more. I do it as a warm-up before my actual workout. They're great. If you can't keep up then you have no chance of handling 1 rep of stretches. Especially the kind I do. They would either make you sweat/burn or you wouldn't feel like walking for a while.
It's just a matter of me finding the time, which should be easier now that I quit my Fred Meyer job and only have my job doing IT now. ^^Ahahahaahahahaah! You're doomed. ;D
Are there other ways to make abs more leaner? I tried doing crunches for three weeks and it hasn't improved. -_-;Maybe try a more natural exercises? I can't think of one activity where crunches are useful. Figure out exercises that actually require you to work your abs and they will be in better shape. I have a tendency to do random cardio but I have so much fat covering my abs that I look like an out of shape surfer that eats too many cheetos. I'm not happy with my body. :/
Does starving count as "getting in shape for the con"?NO!
But... but... I know what I'm doing...
In fact, I've lost 11 pounds in 2 weeks by heavily reducing my food intake.
(The "worst" I've ever done is 5 lbs. in 1 day; it was worth it, though).
concern about weight lossNo you should be rude about it. I've had too many idiot friends that thought it was a good idea to starve themselves throughout school, work or whatever. Though I could never scare them out of acting so stupid so I'm guessing you can't do it either. Anyway it's probably not such a bad thing. Most of them managed to darwin themselves with the health problems they created for themselves and the last one is still holding on because he stopped doing stupid stuff. The damage has been done but he'll probably make it to 30. :/

I see no reason why "stretching" should burn you out though. ^^;I'm a bit unmotivated when it comes to them but my stretches demand quite a bit of balance. I guess they could pass as their own class of exercises. :/
Then you should probably change your phrasing from starving to 'rationing food intake' because again there is nothing positive about those kind of eating habits. Sorry not trying to be rude or anything, and if that's really your way of losing weight than whatever, but I feel like posting comments about 'starving' isn't something that should be supported. Particularly on a board were there are younger posters, and in a thread where it's obvious people are looking for constructive and healthy support in their weight loss ventures.
So I had tried using FitDay, as recommended, but it didn't really fit my routine, I guess. Too many foods I eat aren't in their system, too many exercises I do aren't in their system either. So, moving on.
I did just find MyFitnessPal (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/), though, which seems to be perfect. A lot of people seem to be using it, and it has a ton of food information (even subway and gummi worms! lol). So, yeah, if anyone is looking to track their caloric intake and output, this place seems pretty nifty.
Got to love those shin splints.
It's just kind of hard because I have an early lunch and zero chance to snack later in the day, so I'm always REALLY hungry when I get home. :/
This is a hard one to deal with. Had the same problem in middle school, lunch was at 10:30 and I would come home about ready for dinner.
I would say safe snacks. Wasn't a choice for me as about all we had in the house was mac n cheese top ramen and hamburger helper :P
Chicken Tacos with Charred tomatos (http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/chicken_tacos_with_charred_tomatoes.html)Oh damn you hit the weak spot...Ahahaha!
So far I've made...
Lemon Chicken Stir Fry (http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/lemon_chicken_stir_fry.html) It was pretty good, I let it sit too long though because I was waiting for my boyfriend and my vegetables were like gloop.
Turkey tomato Panini (http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/turkey_tomato_panini.html) HNNNNNNNGH. I had this last night and it was SO GOOD. I'm going to have it again today for lunch. Holy crap. The sauce stuff is super tasty and feels super cheesy.
And I think tonight I'll try Chicken Tacos with Charred tomatos (http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/chicken_tacos_with_charred_tomatoes.html). If anyone wants I can post what I make for dinner everyday to share whats good or not.
Great news! I got a hula hoop like so many people recommended on Saturday and I did it for 45 minutes that night. I was terrible. I did it again last night for an hour getting a little better but still bad. When I did it this morning I was much better, I could keep it up for about 2-4 minutes, AND I was able to make two full turns with my body while keeping the hula hoop going :3 I also woke up a little sore this morning so I think it is working. Its a lot of fun and I really enjoy doing it. Main reason I want to get better is because I want to use Bronte's light up one at the dances :P
Also I start training for my on-call position today and I think there may be some sort of exercise equipment there. If there is I am really hoping I get called in for the overnight shifts because then I can workout while everyone is sleeping (since there wont be a whole lot to do) :D
So I havent started anything yet cause Im a slacker. I tried to start sit ups but then I got some intense pains (not cause of them) and now I get to frequent the clinic until we find out whats wrong. I might have to have my gallbladder removed and if so...I want some tips on what I can do to not stress out my tummy area and what kind of foods i can eat since getting rid of my gallbladder cuts down digestion.
For those of you who dont know, gallbladder stores bile which helps break down food so you can poo better.
Without it Ill need to start eating less greasy crap and more healthy but I dont know healthy.
I can tell my metabolism is really slowing down (damn getting older!).Then cheat? That's how I deal with this. :-\
Oms anyway. There. Muffin gone. Next! :3NO NOT THE KIND YOU OM NOM NOM ON! D:<]
Most of what I've lost since HS to now is thigh circumference.I need to work on losing lower body fat and raise a bit of core muscle to appear more androgynous for my next costume. It's fun to mess with everyone like that. ;D
Do you just mix that in water or tea or something? It's been effective for you?
cardioThe way the local weather behaves, it might be a bad idea but with a gym membership this would probably be ideal. Every other day would be enough to make a difference.
You could do deadlifts and squats, but you don't want to gain muscle, so.. ^^Oh please...She's a girl. It's not like she has anything to worry about when it comes to gaining muscle(except that she's at about 3x the disadvantage I am). Most girls I see in the gym have that crappy zomgthatwillmakememuscular mindset and it sucks. If anything that is why they're still fatties.
You could always buy a cheap $5 jump rope and do 15 minutes of that a day.I'll have to second this idea and the cardio. It's probably the fastest and most reliable way. Unless you have a HUGE backbreaking rack that puts unnecessary pain on half of your body you shouldn't be concerned about those two exercise routines let alone gaining muscle. You just don't have the body or diet necessary to grow big easily like a male can.
It actually kind of sucks, I wish I didn't have this... uh, ability.Okay Chun Li. Shut up and post your workout in detail! :3
RAwR of HoPE! :3Welcome to my world! You're in the same boat as me. Damnit. >.<'
Here's something you'll like: The routine you put yourself through when doing work is what helps you during finals. If you're on vitamins/caffeine/alcohol when learning, you have a better chance of retaining that material when you're still using said substance. This explains why some of my classmates show up for testing half-lit and the others bring in a 2L bottle of Mountain Dew.
MAN YOU GOTTA GET THAT PUMP BEFORE YOU GO OUT THE CLUBS!
Only problem with that is I get caffeine headaches and get drunk off of one bitch beer. Now that sucks.
Ever try the Dr. Scholl's insoles that are made for construction workers / people that stand on hard surfaces all day? They're pretty nice.

I live off of those things..... Seriously I don't know how I'd get through my 8-hour, run around on my feet, shifts without them!I bought some new shoes last week and wore out the soles after half a day. I've been using double sole cushions to stay comfortable on metal scaffolding for 10 hour shifts. At least the place is dry. Before this job I was wearing double soles in rubber boots through 12 hour shifts. God that was nasty...I had to change socks every 6 hours.
My daddy called me chubby today...He is now making me exercise with him daily and eat healthier. </3Jerk!

Jacob- 6' and you want to be 130lb?? That is like super unhealthy, I'd say 160 or a 'bit' lower would be a better weight. You can't be a twig, you need some muscle and fat on you ya' know.

You can't be a twig, you need some muscle and fat on you ya' know.I'm at 6' but I've been trying to break 170lbs for the past three years. Everyone I know at my height is like 210 or 220 and it's extremely frustrating that I don't have the capacity to build myself up like everyone else can. -_-'
Er.. forgot to mention, in that picture I'm around 175lbs. Currently weighing slightly under 180lbs, though I've lost a bit of my muscle so the amount of fat I gained is probably greater than 5lbs. ^^ Curse you, winter months! :<At least you get a winter. I just get a really nasty flood and then a sorry excuse from FEMA. x_X' I currently weigh 170 but that's only because my headset weighs half a pound.
Also, how much cardio do you do? I've heard too much cardio can make it harder to gain muscle. Maybe only do 15 minutes to sort of keep the blood blowing so you don't stiffen up too much? No. That's not it at all. The problem is that my body is complete crap. That's all there is to it. I do anywhere from 20-40 minutes of cardio each day and spend another 20-30 minutes later in the day lifting weights or working on heavy machinery that anyone with my body type has absolutely no business working on all alone let alone carrying this kind of stuff around without power assistance. There have been recent jokes at work recently that since I demonstrate more physical capability than everyone I should just switch to basic mechanic to keep my hands and elbows from being scraped by all the cardboard I've been processing as a materials handler and operator. Normally all the lifting keeps me in shape but for some reason that's not the case anymore. Either there's something I'm not doing or something I'm doing is killing me. It'll take me a while to figure it out.
Man I can't wait for my pool to openI'm going to be glad when I'm at Sakuracon. The hotel makes it possible for me to finally go swimming for the first time in 10 years and the gym area is going to be a lot of fun before naps too.
Swimming is great cardio. O: Easy on the joints, too. It needs to warm up so I can go to the river and lake out in here in Battle Ground. ^^Yeah i have a swimming a pool in my apartment complex just need a new bathing suit
During spring break I went from 85 to 82 T_T.........Wat? o_o
hopefully its going up again..Im eating/snacking more...I'm finally walking around more. Just went out for breakfast on foot for the first time in ages. Got a bagel and the most deliciously bitter black tea. I might exercise today but I'm probably just going to work on my car a bit and then go back to bed. Nothing seems at all worth doing right now. x_X
82lbWait, those weren't kilos? I know that all girls matching my height easily weigh anywhere from 40-60lbs less than me even if they take up twice the space(or if they have giant backbreaking chesthams) but this genuinely frightens me.
Ramen ruins my diet! It's so hard to resist! It's just as damaging as any tasty food you shove down your gullet.

I dont have problems, just a fast metabolism. I eat fine*steals Meep's massively self-destructive MBR...*
seriously. I think I got diabetes just from seeing meep's status updates on the Bookface.+poison
That is some serious weight watching Sui Fong. I prefer the whole eat whatever but get off your ass and do some exercise for an hour or so regularly. I don't think think I could write down everything I consumed and still like myself after a week.lol, if that works for u then grats!! i work out an hour (sometimes 1 1/2) a day, and still need that extra oomph, but its really hard for me to lose weight, i've never had a fast metabolism. plus i realllllllllllllly love sweets....

Well, external looks don't necessarily correlate to how healthy you are inside. ^^;; So you may be able to eat whatever you want, exercise a few hours a week and still look "good" but you may end up with health problems like diabetes down the line. D: Just something to keep in mind!Ya if you just eat sugar and fake ingredients. I watch what I eat some what, like not eating frozen box cardboard or low quality noodles. Mostly, If its fresh and natural I don't care how much I eat. There are some issues with liking my real (no splenda %#@!) sugary treats, but nothing that will kill me down the road. har

Mostly, If its fresh and natural I don't care how much I eat. There are some issues with liking my real (no splenda %#@!) sugary treats, but nothing that will kill me down the road. har
Its finally getting nicer out, so far I managed to get out and ride my bike a few miles this weekend. I haven't lost too much endurance or gained weight over the winter and can bike about the same, but I think I need to step it up some more! As biking is my main exercise, I run 2 miles once in a while between rides, it might be about time to get some bags for the bike and see how many nature areas I can find within 50miles or so to ride too. If anyone else likes long rides you should say something, company is always more fun when you are going so far. :)
I JUST RODE A BIKE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS. IT WAS RIGOROUS AND SWEATY AND GROSS. I PLAN ON DOING IT AGAIN. BE PROUD PLZ, KTHX? =,DYEAH! I haven't rode mine in YEARS!
I AM SO OUT OF SHAPE.
I JUST RODE A BIKE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS. IT WAS RIGOROUS AND SWEATY AND GROSS.About time you got out of the house. >.>'
Currently I'm 18 going on 19 in two months, a short 5'5 and a yucky 148lbs. Although I'm not as big as I could be I'd still like to lose some weight so I don't have to be so self-concious about myself.
My Goal is to lose at least 20 - 30 pounds by Kumoricon, and I hope to reach it by doing what I have been doing. Lots of Sit ups and squats.
Also a little story. I know so many people hate sit ups and squats but the truth is they work. I used to be 260lbs back in middle school and by doing 50 sit ups everyday along with squats I've lost 112 pounds over the years, so you guys can do it!

Wow! That's an amazing testimonial! I have had an on-off relationship with sit-ups. I do them for some weeks and then, for whatever reason, fall out of the habit. I'm gonna have to stick with it though (because your results are pretty amazing). I would love to incorporate squats as well, but my knees are so bad, every time I try I almost collapse because my knees give out. Any suggestions or thoughts? I am thinking if I just do very shallow squats at first it may help me strengthen my knees, and I can gradually go deeper.
Eve, that is most likely muscle,it weighs twice as much as fat and you want it! It helps you burn fat
I'm not really a fan of sit-ups / crunches for reasons I elaborated earlier, but if squats hurt too much maybe try goblet squats (http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/most_recent/goblet_squats_101) instead? Just use a single 20lb dumbbell or something to start out. ^_^
How tall are you, Schemer? . o .
Also, seeing as how cheer work outs are 2-hours a day on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and they totally kick my butt, I've started to get more muscle and lose fat. * U *
JUST GOTTA LOSE DIS STOMACH FAT AND I AM A-OKAY FOR SUMMER.
[/determined]
The world is conspiring against me! D: Today, I decided to start making a log of all the food I eat. My dad is having pizza tonight. My brother bought a ton of Papa Murphy's pizza. And my friend ate pizza earlier today. WTF. D:
<-- eating canned chicken, canned kidney beans, and canned black olives for dinner tonight.
Also I have a Myfitnesspal, if anyone else does, so we can be internet bros on there.
Yay! Keep it up, Tofu. Do you have a goal or any particular changes you are aiming for in exercising?Well I need to lose at least 40 pounds to be in a healthier weight range. But I really want to gain more muscle definition. More than I have at least. >u>
Tahnkies ^^so im happy peter fits me agian :D
One of my costumes has short shorts and that has always been a weakness of mine. My thighs are very fit due to soccer but up at the top my inner thighs are flabby so if I wear short shorts its kinda like a muffin top so I want to make sure they look good in the shorts. Plus it would be nice if my thighs wouldn't touch when I am standing, my jeans would last longer too x.x
Black~Rose, maybe adding coconut oil to your diet may help? ^^

SO I HAVE A BIT OF A PROBLEM.
I am in Cheerleading, so while we do a lot of running, and conditioning, there is also muscle building, and as we all know, muscle weighs more then fat.
I know that I have a good amount of arm muscle (not noticable unless I flex, thankfully~) and leg muscle and whatnot, but knowing that I do have all this mucle, I'm having a hard time knowing whether my weight is good or not.
I'm 5'7" and 130lbs, but I'd like to get down to 120lbs before the end of summer.
tl;dr how do I lose weight, while still gaining muscle? Is it possible, since muscle weighs more then fat?
SO I HAVE A BIT OF A PROBLEM.Keep doing what you are doing and you should be fine. Also make sure you eat well. your weight really doesn't matter. What matters is inches on your body so take measurements of you chest, waist, hips, around the thighs and I like to take it around my belly. Take a guy that weighs 200lbs and is 5'9'' or so. If he mainly has muscle it is going to look a lot different at 200 lbs than if he mainly had fat. No one cares that he is 200 lbs because he looks like he is thin and healthy.

FFFFF.... So I finally got a new bathing suit and I'm realizing how badly I need to get into shape. Been doing some Zumba again, and will do random stretches and plank stands/crunches throughout the day.Its good that you took a picture. You aren't being overly critical the changes you get will be very gradual so you won't notice them day to day. Say you grow half an inch a day. You won't notice it but after a month you look back and you will see it.
Still fluctuating between 127-133lbs as per usual, but I really wish my thighs and stomach would slim down some more. I threw my swimsuit on real quick to show my friend while chatting on Skype, and decided to snap a picture to give myself an idea of my current size, and even there I can see that my thighs/hips are still pretty dang wide. My friend said that they look slimmer, but I don't see it.... I guess it's possible I'm just being overly critical though. =/
Just got done from playing full court basketball for about an hour and a half. Felt good. Although after the 3rd game . . not sure if I tweaked something under my left rib cage . . or if I took an elbow . . or if it was just from breathing so hard . . but it was starting to hurt, becoming stiff, and it was difficult to breathe/catch my breath at times.
Besides that though, felt great. I love that feeling after you've thoroughly kicked your own butt at something. :D
So after a lot of issues with my intestines, almost becoming anemic, and having bodily malfunctions due to lack of water...I have decided I need to eat a lot better and get my body back into shape. The famous "8 glasses a day" thing is actually supposed to include the water that comes inside the food you eat. I used to have a problem drinking water and to ease into it I would buy those Crystal Light flavor packets to put in bottles of water, and I started drinking like three of them a day because they were so good. Now I can drink water by itself but that new Mio stuff you squirt into water is REALLY good, my mom buys the purple flavor and it's DELICIOUS.
I'm not fat but I want to be toned. The first step is to start eating better.
But how do you guys do it?
I don't really know how much I'm supposed to eat a day. I know 8 glasses of water and I'm going to print myself off a sheet to keep track of that stuff but food wise I'm lost.
I have started eating one 90 cal fiber bar a day to help with that and I have been eating broccoli but I also know I eat a lot of junk. I eat more bread than I need (I love bread), it's rare that I eat fruit, and I eat a lot of meat. But...what are the portions I'm supposed to have in a day? How do I keep myself healthy? DX
Hmm... weird. I've had some pain on my side before, always on my left, but it was more closer to my stomach or kidney area. This was directly under my rib cage. Or even like, on the very lower edge of my rib cage. Does that still sound the same? It wasn't a side ache or anything like that, I've had that plenty of times. xD

I'm 113 again but since I've been working with weights I'm not too worried about it. I'm kinda starting to accept and like the way I look =]
Today's food intake was a major step back for me x_x oh well I will cut back tomorrow and the days after that I will be on a strictly liquid diet thanks to the removal of my wisdom teeth.

I got my wisdom teeth removed back in January....the first day was horrible, I'm not gonna lie. But all the days after that weren't so bad. It gave me an excuse to eat ice cream every day...hehe. But yeah, other than ice cream I drank a lot of soup and ate a lot of yogurt.
I think i want to try the ' just dance ' games for the wii . It looks like fun and work. It's amazing! I love that game, works you till you sweat and you're just having fun!
Pride makes us feel good – shame makes us feel bad.
New research from the Marshall School of Business shows that when it comes to motivation we’ll do more out of pride than we will out of shame.
Three separate groups of volunteers were put into in a room with a large slab of chocolate cake and told they could eat as much as they want.
One group was asked to focus on the pride they’d feel if they resisted the cake. The second group was asked to imagine the shame they’d feel if they ate it. The third group wasn’t given any special instructions.
It turns out that the group that focused on the pride of resisting the cake ate much less than those who focused on the shame of giving in. They also ate less than the group who were just let loose.
Pride focuses on the person and success. Shame focuses on the cake and failure. This doesn’t just apply to chocolate cake. It’s the same whether you are escaping from bad habits, improving your health or building confidence.
EDIT
@ Black~Rose :
I take it you had wisdom teeth surgery recently? I lost almost no weight when I had my surgery last spring. I switched between water, apple juice, milk, milkshakes, instant mashed potatoes (of 2 flavors). I became really determined to eat hard food and would attempt soggy cheerios, soggy ginger snaps and swallowing small bits of bananas. I stayed pretty good around 110 for a whole month :)
I didn't get to eat my beloved pretzels until almost 2 months out, but I could start pasta sooner.
I'm braving sandwiches and stuff but not so much crunchy things and things I have to open wide for. I also keep it away from the back of my mouth. I normaly weigh around 110 - 115 but I cant seem to eat enough to bring me back to 110 x_x.Hm.. The potatoes'll fatten you up if you eat a lot. Apple sauce'll work good. You'll want to stay away from anything to acidic or involves a lot of sucking motions, so ignore straws and use spoons. If you want to keep up with nutrients though, I'd say get SlimFast or something of that nature since it generally has some vitamins.

I'm usually around 104-115. It's bad for me if I get over 110 range though, and especially 115 because it creates greater weight on my knees which they can't handle. If you can eat sandwiches you could try pizza or mac&cheese to fatten yourself up some. French breads and baguettes work too. (I'd say cut the pizza into tiny pieces to carefully chew, and be careful with the mac&cheese and make it more liquidy. And pull apart the bread so you only eat the soft inside.)
Nikki- Could you perhaps share this motivation with me? ;-;Me too, oh my god. *__*
Wow Chihiro thats pretty damn impressive. I wish I could say I've lost that much. Thanks, I blame it on a radical change of diet and 6 hours of labor work a day for a month straight. Really helps slim you up, but not highly recommended as it was a rather unhealthy, and un intentional, way to lose weight.
@Jianna: Is there any specific place to get protein powder, or is it just available anywhere? I've had issues not getting enough protein in my diet, though I have been eating a lot more eggs than I used to, as well as canned tuna fish. Though getting a sufficient amount of protein daily is really difficult and I tend to lose motivation. :<
THIS. This is my ideal diet.

I'll be honest: diets DON'T work for me (unless I have someone doing it with me) I don't have enough discipline for it. However something that has worked and I've 7 inches and dropped 20lbs in four months is SWIMMING. I'm on swim team, and of course it's pretty intense, but you don't even have to e on a team to work out. Also something that helped me loose the lbs (I gained muscle in place of fat, but lost 7 inches off my waist), was a liquid diet for four days. Mind you this was not intentional, nor do I have an eating disorder. I have Crohns disease, and I had to have tests done so I had to be on a liquid diet for a few days. Stuff like Popsicles, broth/bouillon, Gatorade, and jello were things I ate and lost some lbs. Now I'm not saying go out and do this, its not a healthy way to loose weight, but because of my disease I can't eat "bad foods" anymore. I'm not allowed to eat wheat, or anything with wheat in it. This alone is healthy for not just people with bad insides, but just overall. Ine thing I an guarantee is that you will feel better and look better just by avoiding wheat. There are options, of course I've eaten the same thing for dinner for the past week, but it's not all that bad. Chicken breast, a mashed sweet potato, and some green beans is a meal that's really great, and healthy. Also "ryvita" sesame crackers with cream cheese on it is amazingly delicious. And I'm not trying to say I'm the healthiest eater out there, but instead of buying a bag of chips, buy a bar of dark chocolate. I've been without wheat and "toxic foods" for two weeks, ad my symptoms are gone.
oh my god, I sound like my nutritionist.
Eating more veggies :D cook em with a piece of chicken if you don't like how broccoli tastes :)
Cosplay I want to do this for: Black Rocket Shooter
Weight: 105-ishlbs
Weight goal: 90-80lbs
Total # of lbs I want to lose: 10-25lbs
Age: 13 years old (yes, I'm a fatty ;-;)
It depends how you distribute the weight... I have more muscle than fat from what I can tell, cause I'm 5' and weigh about 110-115. I think the only fat I could afford to loose is on my stomach and sides a bit, but it's hard cause I have to eat a lot for a fast metabolism x.x;mmhmm and mucel weighs more then fat :D what my moma says to me ^^
Current Status: I'm 13 (next month) I weigh 102lbs & my height is 5'2"
Goal: To lose my tummy fat, and some leg fat...
Plan: Start P90x with my dad, do a juicing fast for 10 days with my mom, take more walks with my friend, and TRY to lay of the Pocky...

warm bath with some bath salt and relaxing candles should do the tick
A lot of younger people think that the little flab they have on their arms, butt, tummy, thigh or anywhere else make them fat. Please understand that you probably are not fat. Instead, you have no muscle so everything seems flabby, and you probably don't do much energetic activities. To get rid of these areas (my stomach is my bad spot) you should probably gain muscle mass instead of lose "weight" in these areas. Exercise in any for is going to give you more muscle, the muscle is going to use up more carbs and give you a better, firmer, body shape.
If you are one of those people who think you are a little too chub in a few spots, PLEASE get up and start moving and you will see results. >^.^<
So this is my second week of Insanity and found out that my size 5 skinny jeans are getting a tad looser on me and also found that I lost two pounds. :D I'm so excited!Lets see a picture ^.~

hay silly question for everyone do any of u work out in a gym and would u like to work out with me i feel kind of embarrassed working out by my selfI used to, but I find its much easier to work out at your own home. If you really want to use the gym, I suggest you go with a family member or a close friend. You'll be more comfortable and I suggest you pick a gym where they have some strict rules. Gyms like anytime fitness, where they have you wipe down the machines after use, and they have a thing where you don't have to deal with obnoxious body builder types who love staring at their muscles and grunting. They have a "MUST BE QUIET" rule.
Current Status: 13 years old, 5' at about 110 lbs, Stomach could use definition and want to stay in shapeMake sure not to over do it, your weight right now is pretty good, I would focus more on toning. Yes I would say cut back a bit on sugar and eat more healthy foods but if right now your motabolism can burn it, there really isn't much need for improvement. But I think just overall toning is a good idea, and those small exercises you plan seem good, though as I said before, running isn't really best for complete weight loss, its a good hobby but I would add some sit ups or something extra, just for upper body.
Goals: I want to weigh 100 lbs and be more defined by Con
Method: Cut back on sugar (I eat quite a bit and should stop) and run, strecthes, and just dance
Going as smaller character (perfect for my height!) and need to look it, my eating habits aren't the best so this should help! I'll weigh in every week if possible.

Today is my first day of working out in a gym, haha.Just make sure to stretch when done exercising so your muscles will be leaner and longer. I do suggest you keep an exercise in for your legs, like a bike or something but in order to keep it from being one huge hunk of muscle, stretching works pretty good.
I'll definitely take what you said, Kumi! Everything I was taught in health sort of flew out of my head, sadly.
However, something that bothers me is how muscular my calves are right now. When I flex, there's hardly a bit of fat on them even when I smack it, absolutely hard as a rock and HUGE. Would it be okay to skip that? Are there any exercises for (lol) slimming muscle? Apart from a little chub, that's my main "Aaaaaaa don't look at my leggsssss!!!"
Well, for Sakuracon, I still have a gut. I still have my back brace that works very well for hiding it, but I'm hoping to not need it come Kumori-con. My mother and many friends and associates from my synagogue have recently gotten into some replace-a-meal shake program thing; my mom lost 6 points in 4 days. I think it's worth at least looking into...If it works for her, then it might work for you, but remember that if you replace one meal with that shake, you have to keep a good diet for the rest of your meals, many times I have heard stories of some people that have tried that but have thought, "It will work so I'll just eat whatever I want for the rest of the day!" But in truth, that just makes it worse.
^ It depends on what's in the shakes you're talking about. These ones have enough nutrients in them to replace a full meal easily, maybe even two. If people have those thoughts, then they're stupid.Sounds like an interesting idea, and I agree. Let me know if you start and how you feel after the second day.
Good luck everyone, keep up the good work. I myself lost 30 lbs last fall but sadly gained 10 back over the winter. :-\That is still a 20 lb. loss ^^
I started losing weight with a trainer 3 1/2 months ago and so far I've lost 60lbs :D Still needing to lose 75lbs :)........... Ohmy. Congratulations! That is waaay better than how I'm doing right now, but, wow. Keep going, thats awesome work!
I started losing weight with a trainer 3 1/2 months ago and so far I've lost 60lbs :D Still needing to lose 75lbs :)wow, way to go!!!!
Okay, I have read the first 4 pages, and I think I will jump in here. Maybe it will help with motivation.... I dunno.
Current Status: I am turning 22 next week (the 17th), I am 5'9", and I weigh the most I have ever been, fluctuating around 235/240. I'm told I don't look it, but that is because I make myself have good posture and if I am awake, I am sucking in my gut... :(
Goal: I was at 180 when I graduated high school in 2008. Since then, I have gained around 60 pounds, most of it when I moved in with my boyfriend in 2009. Even then, I was still considered overweight for my size/age. I would like to get down to 170. That means losing around 70 pounds.
Plan: So far, only plan I have is to eat healthier... which is a little difficult. I live in a studio apartment with my bf... we only have a mini fridge, and a microwave. No stove, no freezer. So we are pretty stuck with microwave dinners, canned pastas or soups, etc. Our place is tiny too, we dont have room for any exercise equipment. I work full time at a gas station, and on my days off, I work an in-home party company. When I am not working either of those, it is a Sunday, and I am involved with an NPO LARP called Amtgard. So, I dont really have time or energy for going to a gym. =\
Progress: In the last few weeks, I have been trying to slowly change my eating habits. I have been buying less chips, and instead, buying granola from the bulk food area, there are several different flavors. I have been trying to switch from drinking soda all the time to water, tea and gatorade/powerade (this is difficult for me, as I get severe migraines if I dont get enough caffeine every day).
soo...i lost alot of body fat but not weight..strange. and i can fit more into my costume..jsut a few more weeks of hard work and i'll sip that dress up all the way..thats what i get for having a sister getting my costume and not knowing my size lol.Probably gained muscle.
OokamiYami thats great progress. It makes me want to suffer through p90x. I planed on starting up again soon. Maybe I will actually try to go through with it. You look great though. I love how much your legs grew in the last month (I am a fan of muscular thighs)
I'm Sloan, 16, 5' 3" and 172 pounds. I've been gaining rapidly from a medical condition we just found and treated. I cant wait to get back down to the 120-140 area!
I'd like to hopefully lose 20 pounds by Kumoricon and 50 by next Sakuracon..
I am going to start going to the gym as soon as I can afford a membership, but until then I'll start watching my calories and playing a little wii fit every day ^^
I started p90x today. I also got some before pictures. I'm hoping to actually stick with it this time. I have a bit more motivation than I did last time so I think I will be able to.
Im working hard with my trainer so that I'll get down to 150 by Kumori con :)
And since the 60lb loss I've lost 8lbs, gotta love fitness trainers <3
How are you going to reach that goal.
Status: i'm 15, i'm almost 6'2" and i was almost 200 lbs last time i checked, although, thats only a tad above average for my height .__. according to most height weight charts, although kids my age aren't usually almost 6'2" and my doctor said it'd probably be best to get down to average rather than stay a tad above
my goal: i want to lose some weight, and get rid of some of mah chubs if i can
plan: recently i've been getting in near 300 crunches in a week, rather then a few every now and then, and i've been eating a bit less since a normal amount of food for most americans is a crap-ton for alot of other people all over the world, been eating more fruit(wont get scurvy) and veggies :U compared to other things, i wish i had the chance to eat fish more often.... i like fish XD, also i've been lifting weights, just little arm ones, ya know the ones that go one in each hand, although thats just to get stronger in general, been taking more walks, i usually take alot of walks year round but during my walks i've been trying to speed myself up, and jog a bit more, i have no friggin clue how much i weigh because my mom refuses to have a scale in her house, i just remember right before i started being more active about 2 months ago my doctor said i'm a bit above avrage for my height, she said cause i'm a teenager it'd be best to get down to average, so i been trying to get more active thanks to my doctor~ i can really thank her for the advice because excersizing makes me feel better about myself and it makes my body feel alot better to :T
and besides losing weight, working my body on a regular basis makes me stronger in general, and i like that kinda
I've now lost 105lbs :D
I'm starting a new diet plan for my Bane cosplay next year. I am thinking of starting a meal-replacement shake, something high-protein and low-calorie. Anyone have any meal replacement shakes they suggest? I have a year to lose 100 lbs. and I will also be working out daily and cutting all soda, sugar and junk food. I think I can make this happen. If you aren't allergic to anything (like dairy), you could try Ensure. I actually got better results out of Slimfast when I'd drink it every morning for breakfast. But that was like 8 years ago, and when I had some recently it gave me a stomachache. I believe both come in the flavors vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. You could try one of those many vitamin fruit/veggie drinks that are out now. V8 isn't one of the best considering it's sugar & sodium load is equal to soda roughly, but I did see some at Costco that were better in those areas. I think TreeTop had a good one.

Aw man, reppy. I love frozen pizza and pasta roni xDDD I've actually had so much pasta roni in college that I'm pretty over it, but I can't outgrow frozen pizza.
Lack of appetite makes it harder to diet and just been flat out lazy since the con. After I finish these V8's I'm gonna opt for them no more probably and just stick to milk :)
If I eat bad food, I at least try to make it be something nice from an actual restaurant instead of fast food. . I feel slightly better about it that way. XD
Or something like sushi.
"Sure, I ate 13 plates of sushi . . but it's just fish and rice, anyway!"
Current Status: I'm 28 and weigh 135lbs. I am generally around 130-135 and have an athletic build. (Ex martial artist) I shape up fairly easy but I am lazy.
Goal: I could care less about weight loss. I just want to tone up a bit to where I will feel secure running around in a bikini (following con regulations) with an apron over it. I am not quite there.
Plan to reach goal: I plan to start doing yoga on Thursdays to help with toning up. I hope by posting this that I'll actually act on this instead of talking about it.

Check out The Warrior Room. that is where I've started going to boot camp. If you want to tone up it's a good place to go. Small class size and no membership fees. Just pay for the classes as you go. $9 a session. they will whip you in shape in no time.
Question, if I were to eat right, do you think Hula Hooping or stationary biking would help me lose weight? :O

Definatly eat right. Don't skip breakfast. Stationary bike will burn the calories better then Hula. However, Hula is awesome for working your abs and core muscles. I would do both. While on the stationary bike. You need to do HIITs which is High Intensity Interval Training. Basically go at a nice steady pace for a couple minutes then do 30 secs of going as fast as you can. Then bring it back down. The go high intensity again. Do that over and over for your entire work out. It works, trust me. I've lost 30lbs doing that.
Lost 50 pounds thus far, soon to my Christmas goal weight. Going to the gym on my days off then going to start going before work.
Gaining muscle and starting to really notice the change. Must stop eating food after work though, its messing up my schedule. ::)

Current status
I am 20 years old, 5'3" (ish?), and 120lbs at my heaviest. For flexibility, I can touch my toes, but that's pretty much it...
Goal
Tone, endurance, and flexibility! I am technically at a healthy weight, so I would like to tone the little muscle I have, and become WAY more flexible. My main cosplay for next year is Crona, and I would like to be able to bend backwards! Crona makes such awesomely stretchy poses look easy, and I'd like to do the same.
Plan
I have been trying to wake up early enough to eat a healthy breakfast and pack a lunch and/or snacks, but I need to wake up even EARLIER so that I can either walk or bike to school. This will not only save me money, but subtly help my endurance. There are different routes I can take that have varying difficulties, so my body doesn't get bored. I joined a rock climbing club at school, so I can hopefully start that up again! When I was rock climbing 2-3 times a week, I noticed the best results for my body; plus I hate "working out", so this was a great exercise choice for me. I also want to start up dance again in the winter (it didn't fit in my schedule for fall), so that will help my flexibility a bit. I need to find a BEGINNERS yoga class in my area, but until then I will be adding a stretching regime to my morning/evening routine.
Current Status: I'm 13, almost 14, and I'm around 5 foot, 5 inches. Last time I checked my weight(which was about a month ago for the doctor's), I was 152 pounds. My doctor said I was overweight, and I plan to change that. I'm working on flexibility at school for PE, so right now, I can touch my toes and barely touch the ground.
Goal: My goal is to become in the range I'm supposed to be(I have no idea what that is) by summer at the least. So if someone can tell me what it is, I'd gladly appreciate it. I just want to have a healthier body shape for Ran-Mao from Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji.
Plan to reach goal: Whatever I can do, really. Tips and advise are gladly appreciated. In the current home situation I'm in, the only time I have to exercise is on my way to school, during school, coming back from school and going back and forth to a friends house and library. I am slowly gaining my lost flexibility for those difficult poses I am imagining.
Please help me!

I don't have any tips on how to reach your goal, but your weight range I think should be around 120-125? That's my weight range and I'm about the same as you (14 and 5'4"). I hope this helped! :)

That has helped bunches! Thank you so much.
Anyone who lives near wilson high school want to get together for workouts on the track let me know. I need workout buddies or I don't seem to do it.
Current Status: 16 (ill be 17 for the next k-con!) weight: 145-150 (cry) and i'm 5'2-3. hip problems.
Goal: Flat tummy! and skinny thighs XD that's all a girl ever wants though. I'll be cosplaying Patty Thompson again from soul eater and i need the flat tummy for the belly shirt. Also i was thinking about doing a Zebstrika (other than that it's a mystery)
Plan to reach goal: i have a thing for school to work out 5 hours a week. (i hardly do it) but i'll start again and i'll go to the gym! work with the weights and the tredmill will hopefully help me to my goal.
Congrats! Yeah, what many people don't realize is that even if they work different specific parts of their body such as the arms, even that will cause weight loss around the body area because of the increased metabolism. Every bit helps, though it is always best to focus on specific areas (along with proper stretching) for maximum effect.
If I were to make the video series, I could use show name suggestions. I had a show name for it last week while I was on the way to the gym but I completely forgot it. >.<

That's actually not at all true depending on how it's taken. Spot training in many instances does less for you due to your body quickly becoming accustom to certain repeated exercises. That and in the name of weight loss, a decent diet, various forms of cardio, and low weight high rep lifting will shed pounds rather quickly.
Now, if you want to tone/bulk and such, spot training starts being more effective when you dedicate workouts to muscle groups.

What I was trying to point out is how just general exercise will increase the body's overall metabolism and sure beats out inactivity. Yes, your body does get used to certain workouts and hit plateaus but it is better than nothing even if it's low rep low weight. I don't know how that wasn't clear enough to understand since you are talking about the completely different topic of the difference between weight vs reps. Almost all exercises work the core muscles as well, but not as much as if you were to focus on it with crunches or situps for example.
Though, along the lines of that subject; I do prefer high rep workouts because they are usually less likely to injure and also allows to keep more flexibility and build leaner muscle. I've never much been a fan of strength training as much due to the loss of those advantages, but it sure does put a jump starter to the metabolism along with provide the typical sculpted muscle look. Strength training is also slightly less boring to do in comparison to more reps and is often one of the easier ways to deal with trouble areas.
Aside from being spot on to what I meant, this post is full of truth. Loads of people go for six packs and such by just trying to do sit ups and crunches every night...and then eating fast food and primarily unhealthy stuff. Even by not doing any additional workouts, one would achieve better results maintaining a healthy diet and cutting sugars than heavy core exercises with an awful diet.Congrats! I think Nek was trying to say that it is better to do an exercise that works multiple muscle groups rather than just one muscle group. For example doing squats works your back, core, and all of your legs is better for you than just doing quad extensions, or just hamstring curls.
As for the core exercises, yeah doing other exercises don't build your core AS much but they do work a lot to build the core. If you are doing free weight squats you have to engage your core quite a bit in order to do the move properly. I can do crunches till I am blue in the face and feel nothing. If I do pull ups my stomach is sore the next day.
It is still good for you to do crunches and other core exercises but don't do them expecting you will get a six pack because you wont (not unless your body fat is under a certain %). The best way to get a six pack is diet (really diet is about 75-90% of getting a six pack), and compound weight lifting exercises such as squats, deadlifts, pull ups, bench press, dips and so on, as well as cardio. Just doing 500 crunches will only build muscle UNDER the fat and can actually make your stomach look bigger. The muscles in your core do not burn enough calories to get rid of the fat, but the muscles in your legs, back and chest, can HELP get rid of that fat because as they get bigger they burn more calories. So many people think that they need to do x amount of crunches to get abs and actually exercise has nothing to do with it. It all comes down to body fat %, I think its something like under 15% for men and under 19% for women (I may be wrong), that is why you see really skinny guys that don't work out with six packs. Everyone has abs, the fat just hides them. And in order to get rid of that fat you need to focus on diet.
I've been on a milkshake kick the last week though. At least I'm on the tail end of it.
YAY sunshine and time! I had enough time to do some 'light' exercises for 30 min before class today. My knees are kind of wobbly, but I didn't wear myself out and I can still walk. My spine doesn't hurt either :) .I have that problem with my knees too, I really want to steady(?) them up some if that makes sense. Mine are double jointed they bend backwards a bit which makes finding my center of balance really hard.
Ohkay thanks! I'm still new to all this training/exercise stuff so I hope im not bothering you too much.No its fine I love talking about working out. It has become a huge hobby of mine and I am actually hoping that I will be able to host a panel about it at kumo. I usually aim for my heart rate to be at 160 but I am in pretty good shape and my heart can handle it. Your target heart rate changes from person to person. One way of looking at it is it should be difficult to hold a conversation while you are working out. Like you would only be able to get a word or two out before having to take a couple of deep breaths. Thats where I try to be when working out.
After about two minutes I start feeling my heart beat pretty heavy and fast, and I start to sweat around that time too.
So I know I'm doing pretty good. I plan to start walking/jogging at like 6am Mon-Friday or at least three times a week with my Elliptical at 15 minutes everyday, but now probably 2 or 3 20 minutes a day thing..
I'm rambling now.. sorry.
WOMEN: 226 - your age = age-adjusted Max HRThe page also has an ideal target heart rate during exercise, and a target zone... Giving it a read over and a visit to the doc will help :)
MEN: 220 - your age = age-adjusted Max HR
Example: If you are a 30-year-old woman, your age-adjusted maximum heart rate is 226- 30 years = 196 bpm (beats per minute).
I just talked to my gym coach and she mentioned the calculation we posted before but said over 200 is most likely dangerous. She said that as a general rule of thumb that if you can't have a conversation during the workout then you're straining yourself too much.
SOOO I actually got a membership at a gym and went three times so far, who'd of thought? Hopefully I can try to get in shape this way since I'll have my boyfriend coming with me when I go (I got a buddy!).
@Smile: Insanity?? I saw a thing on tv on that and it seemed super hard, I wish you luck!
And for words of advice... I'd say don't work yourself too hard one day, if your muscles get too sore it might take a few days to feel better and you'll fall out of the habit. (At least that's happened to me one too many times.)
Gyms are so intimidating! The times I've gone I felt like I had no idea what I was doing and felt like everyone was secretly laughing at me -_- lol
It's really hard to not work myself too hard with Insanity cause literally every other word coming from the fitness instructor is "Push! Dig deeper!" and I'm like '...okay @x@' .... xD Good times~
Everyone starts somewhere. I wouldn't worry too much about people watching you and laughing at you at gyms. Most of the time people are so focused on their workout to even care about anyone else. The other few times they will be impressed that there are girls even in the weight section, bonus points if you are using free weights instead of machines. When I find people actually watching me I just smile and say to myself "That's right. You watch me as I squat double my body weight and you be impressed. I am a force to be reckoned with"
Keep it up and you will learn the machines quickly, the weight you lift will go up and you will not be so worried. If you are interested in lifting weights then a word of advise, if you are going for the "toned" look you need to lift heavy weights. Do not fall for the "lift lighter weights for more reps" that just increased your muscle endurance. The way to get the "toned" look is to build muscle, and as a woman you wont be able to build muscle anywhere near the size of men. So please, lift HEAVY weights, not light ones. You want to barely be able to finish your last rep (shooting for 3 sets of 8) each set. This article explains it pretty well http://www.jcdfitness.com/2013/05/how-to-build-muscle-womens-edition-part-1/ (http://www.jcdfitness.com/2013/05/how-to-build-muscle-womens-edition-part-1/)

Hmmm, that was actually really helpful, so far I haven't been lifting any weights but I know now I'll have to. Though, is that article I didn't really find a place that tells me how to get a flat stomach. Are sit up just fine? I try to do the crunch machines but when I do that they don't seem to work too well. Should I just keep at those until I improve? I can work with the weights. I'll defiantly focus on those a bit more next time I go.
I weighed myself the other day, and even though I haven't lost any weight, I haven't gained any either.
I start work at Joann fabrics, so I'm going to start being on my feet a lot, so I'm only going to worry about running 30 minutes everyday.
I have a pudge around my stomach and hips, and it's mostly from the breads and pastas I consume. If I just replaced them with something else like veggies or fruit, or just cut back how much of them I eat, it'll get smaller. It also seems to get smaller if I do some basic Pilates workouts (like the one that involves lifting your hips up off the ground and then lowering them down). Working out just with sucking your tummy in helps :)
That might just be me though.... I know one thing I'll do is during a long car ride I'll sit with my stomach sucked in since I'm doing nothing else.
Ah, gotcha. Have you given ATG a try, at least? I had to de-load a bit and work on getting hamstring-to-calf low when I started them, but I still feel like I get a lot more out of it.I haven't tried it too much...I'm just worried about my knees since I have had problems with them. As for my DL I just haven't really tried putting more weight on. And I was off for two week so I wanted to ease back into it a little before I went back to where I was so I didn't get hurt.
Deads are still mostly legs and back, so how good you're doing in squat should be reflected in your DL's. What part of it is making it difficult to progress?
So I increased my dead lift yesterday and lowered my squats so I could go lower. Yesterday was a very stressful day at work and a got a couple of after hour phone calls that kept me from finishing my workout (mainly I just was exhausted and drained emotionally and had no more motivation) but I still got quite a bit in
Assisted Chin ups 3x8: 100, 100, 100
Assisted Pull ups 3x8: 95, 95, 95
Seated Rows 3x8: 95, 105, 105
Back Extensions 2x8: 35, 35 (the squat rack opened up so I jumped on it.)
Squats 3x8: 155, 165, 185 (going lower)
Lunges 3x8: 95, 105, 115
Lat Pull down 3x8: 75, 90, 90
Dead lifts 3x8: 135, 140, 145 (10 pounds heavier! WOO!)
Bent Over Rows 3x8: 60, 60 55
I wasn't able to do the leg press machine, finish my back extensions, or the thigh adductor but that's about it. My tushy is sore and my back is a little sore too. Just one more day of lifting this week then its time for a break. Tonight is chest, arms, shoulders, and core again. Also tomorrow I plan on taking new measurements, weight, and BF% with picture to see if I have made any progress. I feel like I have but well see what the numbers say (I mainly focus on the measurements and bf% over actual weight)
A few weeks ago, I started on a low-gluten/ gluten free diet (I try to only eat it on Fridays). And its been pretty successful! I lost almost 10 lbs already!
Later next week, I'll finally have a workout buddy at school that will do early morning workouts with me. Its hard to find someone that wants to work out at 6:30. I'll be putting together most of our workouts, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in me putting them up here or on a blog?

That sounds a lot like my diet! :D My diet is called a "slow carb" diet, which means I avoid pretty much all carbs, except from stuff like legumes, vegetables, etc. Saturday I eat whatever the heck I want!
And there's a pretty cool site called Fitocracy.com. It's like an MMO for exercise or something. :) You earn achievements and stuff when you enter your workouts. I think you can even join groups and have friends. It should be free and open to the public, but if it's not let me know I think I have an invitation I can send out.

How do you like it? I'm feeling great after settling into this diet. It's also improved my emotions a bit!
Oh! I have a fitocracy, I totally forgot about it haha. Want to swap usernames?

I feel that I should warn you that gluten free diets are actually *usually* worse if you are trying to lose weight. Most gluten free alternative foods cause more weight gain (more carbs and starches among other things that non-gluten free has less of for more energy and nutrition). Normally when people lose weight from a gluten free diet it is due to one and/or two reasons: #1 people on gluten free diets are usually more aware of what is in their food and usually stick to a healthier diet of fruits and veges where gluten isn't even a factor #2 Allergies may have caused the weight gain in the first place, so when the person gets the item out of their diet they can lose weight.
Having the symptoms of Celiac's disease myself, I have had to do years worth of research on the subject. Really, there is only an advantage if you have health problems caused by a gluten intolerance/Celiac's disease/allergy. Of course, it's not going to hurt you being on a gluten free diet, but many people view it as a diet to lose weight like most fad diets when it is usually counter-intuitive for that purpose.
